In School Teachers

 

Joe Klein, LPC, CSAC is the founder of Inward Bound Mindfulness Education (iBme). He has over 20 years experience working with youth as a teacher, counselor and soccer coach. Joe brings playfulness and a whole body experiential integration to his work with young people. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Substance Abuse Counselor and a long term practitioner of mindfulness meditation, yoga and Chinese internal martial arts. Joe teaches a graduate level course on mindfulness and SEL for teachers, social workers and counselors at Radford University and also co-leads retreats on “Mindfulness as Self-Care” for helping professionals in Southwest Virginia. Joe Klein is iBme’s guiding in-school teacher. He has been leading in-school programs for over 15 years and leads iBme’s teacher trainings.
Dr. Lauren Rubenstein is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been working with children, adolescents and adults for more than 20 years. She has a private practice in Bethesda, MD and has been on staff at several area schools (Kingsbury, Accotink, and RICA).  Dr. Rubenstein’s diverse background includes a BA from Tufts, a law degree from Northwestern, and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Rubenstein is also yoga teacher with specialized experience teaching youth. She also has traveled to Haiti to work with youth living in tent cities post-earthquake. As the parent of two teens, one with academic challenges, she has unique insights into the critical, relentless stress levels of our teenagers, their parents, and teachers.
Laura Parris discovered mindfulness practice in 2002. She completed professional training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2004, and soon after began to integrate mindfulness into her work teaching Yoga and Pilates. Laura received her masters in Hindu and Buddhist Studies from Harvard Divinity School, where she explored the intersection of health and contemplative practice. Inspired to introduce young people to the freedom of mindfulness practice, she has offered mindfulness training at schools in New England and Washington DC, including The Groton School, The Cambridge School at Weston, The Karuna School, and Georgetown Day School.
Patrick Cook-Deegan is the West Coast and Development Director at iBme. In 2006, Patrick bicycled 2,800 miles across Southeast Asia raising funds for schools and scholarships in the region. Following this trip, Patrick started a non-profit that sent underprivileged teens from the U.S. to volunteer in developing countries. Prior to joining iBme, Patrick was the Director of Strategic Partnerships at US Campaign for Burma. He has spoken to over 100 schools and universities about the importance of service, global justice, and self-awareness, including at Andover Academy, Yale University, and the Clinton School of Public Service. Patrick has completed six 10-day meditation retreats and maintains a strong daily practice. He is a graduate of Brown University and a Fulbright Scholar.
Jessica Morey is the Executive Director at iBme. She began practicing meditation at age 14 in the Insight Meditation Society teen retreats. She returned every year for 6 years and then participated for 10 years in an IMS young adult mentoring group. Jessica has attended longer (1-3 month) retreats in Asia and the US and is a founding board member and lead teacher for iBme teen retreats. Before joining iBme, Jessica worked in clean energy and climate policy and finance. She holds a BA in Environmental Engineering from Dartmouth and Masters degrees in Sustainable Development and International Affairs.
Howard Moody has been facilitating workshops on play, team building, stress management and wellness for teens, children and adults for over 30 years. Howard has been a faculty member at the Omega Institute for Holistic studies for many years and he is also the co-founder of The Adventure Game Theatre, an extraordinary interactive learning process and camp for teens that was featured on PBS and NPR. In 2012 Howard will be teaching a new course at Omega, entitled “Of Play and Mindfulness.” Howard is happy to bring his love of play, connection and communication to the iBme community.
